MTV’s relentless self-promotional machine rolls on with this 95-minute compilation of performances from the channel’s annual Video Music Awards show (described here as “the only award show that matters”–easy for them to say, since they invented it), ranging from 1990 to 2002. Image is paramount to this operation, especially if there’s a little titillation involved; thus we have the sex-kitten antics of Britney Spears and Shakira, the spectacle of a bare-chested Nelly wearing his jeans not only below his boxers but barely above his knees, and the sheer absurdity of MC Hammer’s costumed cast of thousands crowding the stage for “You Can’t Touch This.” But there’s also some good music here (Nelly’s electrifying “Country Grammar,” the Brian Setzer Orchestra’s swinging “Jump, Jive & Wail,” Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s entertainingly over-the-top “Crossroads”), as well as short features on “turntablism” and pop songwriting. Of course, some may argue that the likes of Jewel (who plays solo) and Pink don’t exactly qualify as rock artists, but there are plenty of genuine rockers here. And even if they wear their influences on the sleeves, people like Lenny Kravitz (with the neo-Hendrixisms of “Are You Gonna Go My Way”), Silverchair (the Nirvana soundalike “Tomorrow”), and INXS (with the late Michael Hutchence coming on like Jim Morrison) put on a good show–as do the predictably outrageous Marilyn Manson (who’s preceded onstage by a marching band), the loud bratty, and fun Blink 182 (appearing with a chorus line of midgets), and the always-reliable U2 (”Please,” from 1997). Nothing amazing here, but entertaining nonetheless. –Sam Graham

Following on the heels of the release of “A Night At the Family Dog” last year, this new DVD brings together two more TV programs from noted music critic and Rolling Stone co-founder Ralph J Gleason, covering the San Francisco psychedelia scene of the late sixties and early seventies. The first disc features the program “Go Ride The Music”, featuring two giants of the era performing live in concert. Jefferson Airplane perform at an intimate indoor venue while Quicksilver Messenger Service are filmed in the open air. There are also cameo appearances from David Crosby and Jerry Garcia. The second disc, “West Pole” features a diverse range of acts including Ace Of Cups, Sons Of Champlin, the Grateful Dead and the Steve Miller Band performing live in various settings and takes a more analytical view of the music and the times.

Twenty years’ worth of country superstar Reba McEntire’s engaging music videos are included on Reba: Video Gold 1. The first thing that stands out is their consistent production quality. There isn’t a single video from, say, the 1980s–an era that left a lot of artists with embarrassing promotional artifacts–in this collection, beginning with the 1986 “Whoever’s In New England,” which casts McEntire as a stay-at-home wife whose busy husband may be cheating on her during business trips. “Sunday Kind of Love” takes a very different approach, setting its pop ballad in a World War II ballroom while, elsewhere, a wounded husband returns home from the war. Another unexpected setting accompanies McEntire’s cover of Don Everly’s “Cathy’s Clown,” in which the song’s hard questions about a jilted man are transferred to the Wild West. “Fancy” is the biggest cliché in this anthology, in which Reba plays a big star returning to her rustic roots, while “Is There Life Out There” finds her portraying a beleaguered waitress trying to go to school and be a devoted wife and mother all at once. (Huey Lewis plays her spouse.)
“Does He Love You,” a duet with Linda Davis, is a fairly tortured story of a man in love with both of the women singing the song. It feels silly, but the whole thing is ultimately played for a laugh. (Rob Reiner, of all people, makes a little cameo appearance.) “Why Haven’t I Heard from You” is the most fun video here, a sassy musical set in a Grecian beauty parlor; McEntire’s appealing but comically rubber face proves a lot of fun. “If You See Him/If You See Her,” a duet with Brooks and Dunn, is a very satisfying performance with a little story that finds Kix Brooks playing a mutual friend to both ex-lovers Ronnie Dunn and McEntire. Things take a sentimental turn toward the end with McEntire’s cover of Kenny Rogers’ “Sweet Music Man,” as well as “What Do You Say” (a maudlin story of a mom dying of cancer) and “He Gets That from Me” (the story of a mother and son getting by after the death of the family patriarch). –Tom Keogh

With any band’s video collection, it’s as fun to track the evolution of their music as their style. In the first few clips on this DVD, released in conjunction with Greatest Hits, the Offspring come across as scrappy So-Cal skate punks in their Germs and Sex Pistols T-shirts. Then they left Epitaph for Columbia. Their catchy pop-punk-metal sound, in the vein of Social Distortion and Green Day, didn’t really change, but by “Gone Away,” Dexter Holland had traded in his cornrows for a spiky ‘do and patent leather shirt. (No wonder some fans felt abandoned.) Fortunately, the band learned from their mistakes and toned down the new wave look by the next video, “The Meaning of Life,” where they race across the desert in wheelchairs, Mad Max-meets-Murderball style. Other highlights include “She’s Got Issues” with Zooey Deschanel and “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)” by McG, who created The O.C.. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
